You don't need a wildfire to burn. Sometimes a small flame in the right place — a look across a room, a hand on a shoulder, someone saying your name like it means something — is enough to change the temperature of everything.
She'd been cold for a long time. Not unhappy, just — cool. Contained. Moving through her days efficiently, feeling things at a reasonable volume. It was sustainable. She was fine with sustainable.
Then he laughed at something she said. Really laughed, not the polite kind. And something in her chest did something it hadn't done in a while, and she thought: oh. There it is. That small, inconvenient, completely worth it flame.
